Dr. Baratunde Cola, Assistant Professor of the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, is one of 81of the nation's brightest young engineers who have been selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 19th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. Engineers (ages 30-45) from industry, academia, and government who are performing exceptional engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines will come together for the 2-1/2 day event to discuss pioneering technical and leading-edge research in various engineering fields and industry sectors.

The program provides an opportunity for top-notch engineers, early in their careers, to learn about cutting-edge developments in fields other than their own, thereby facilitating collaborative work and the transfer of new approaches and techniques across fields. Through both formal sessions and informal discussions, the meetings have proven an effective mechanism for the establishment of cross-disciplinary and cross-sector contacts among this country's future engineering leaders.

The symposium will be hosted by DuPont on September 19-21, at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware, and will cover cutting-edge developments in four areas: Designing and Analyzing Social Networks, Cognitive Manufacturing, Energy: Reducing our Dependence on Fossil Fuels, and Flexible Electronics.

“The well-being of society will rely on engineering ideas developed by our nation’s leading technological thinkers,” said NAE President Charles M. Vest. “The Frontiers of Engineering program gives some of our most talented early career innovators the opportunity to create interdisciplinary relationships that are critical to shaping and advancing the future.”

For more information and a list of all the participants, see the official NAE release.
