The College of Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking nominations and applications from qualified individuals for the position of Chair of the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will hold the Eugene C. Gwaltney, Jr. School Chair. The School is ranked 3rd by U.S. News and World Report and is among the largest mechanical engineering programs in the country with more than 2200 undergraduate and 830 graduate students, as well as 101 tenure-faculty and 10 full-time non-tenure track faculty members. The School’s diverse faculty is actively engaged in research at the national and international level. Research program areas include acoustics and dynamics; automation, robotics and control; bioengineering; computer-aided engineering and design; fluid mechanics; heat transfer, combustion, and energy systems; manufacturing; mechanics of materials; micro- and nano-engineering; and tribology. The school also offers degrees in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering and Medical Physics. The groups in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering are fission, fusion, and medical physics. The School also actively participates in interdisciplinary graduate programs in Bioengineering and Robotics. The School has faculty and students at Georgia Tech’s campus in Metz, France in addition to its home base in Atlanta. The School has an endowment of approximately $75M. Candidates for this position must have an earned doctorate and national and international recognition in their specific discipline based on a proven record of excellence in academic and professional scholarly achievements. The successful candidate should have strategic skills and vision to lead the School toward higher levels of excellence within an inclusive, multi-disciplinary, fast-paced and competitive environment; be able to establish a successful working relationship with federal, state and private funding agencies; work with the faculty and Georgia Tech administration to raise funds from private and public sources; and maintain a close relationship with alumni of the School. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering and is responsible for all administrative, budgetary and personnel decisions within the School. The successful candidate will be expected to provide evidence of fiscal responsibility and exhibit excellent leadership and management abilities, particularly interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills.
